At least 17 children died in Nigeria’s northern Islamic school.
Many other students were injured and rushed to health centers in Kauran Namoda, Zamfara.
It is believed that the fire broke out in a nearby house on Tuesday night and spread to school while the kids who think they were teenagers were asleep.
Local authorities and emergency respondents were sent to the scene, but the fire has already caused significant losses.
Eyewitness Yahaya Mahi told BBC Hausa that the school’s place made it difficult to stop the fire.
“Even if the firefighters had come in time, reaching the house would have been difficult because of the narrow trip to the house,” he said.
According to local official Mannir Haidarra, other Islamic schools are being investigated to make sure that there was no fire risk.
“We take measures to prevent another occurrence of such a nature,” he said.
The father of one of the victims told the BBC Hausa that his faith was destroyed at this time.
