President Volodymyr Zelensky says that Moscow has bombed a boarding school in Ukrainian occupied Russia, where civilians were refuge and prepared for evacuation.
According to the Ukrainian army, four people were killed and dozens – many elderly – were injured in the Kursk region, Sudzha, which is under Ukrainian control for five months.
More than 80 people seem to be rescued from the building.
The BBC was unable to confirm Ukraine’s claim that this was a deliberate Russian attack with the help of an air bomb. Moscow blamed Ukraine in the bombing.
Zelensky wrote on X that the event made Russia a “state of nationality”.
“This is how he pays a war in Russia – Sudzha, Kursk region, Russian territory, a boarding school whose civilians are preparing for evacuation,” he wrote.
“A Russian air bomb. The building was destroyed despite the fact that there were dozens of civilians there.”
The CEO of the Ukrainian army announced on the Telegram that four people had died and 84 civilians had been rescued, adding that “the strike was deliberately carried out.”
The Russian Ministry of Defense said that Ukraine had carried out a Saturday attack, which was described as a targeted missile history.
Ukraine launched a lightning strike at Kursk’s Russian Oblastja last August and surprised the Russian border guards.
The Kiev government made it clear at the time that it had no intention of keeping the seized area, simply to use it as a negotiating chip in future peace breeds.
Zelensky compared Saturday’s strike, “how Russia continued a war against the chess decades ago. The Syrians were killed in the same way. Russian bombs are the same as destroyed Ukrainian homes”.
